Yesterday was an exciting day for Jackson Hole, Wyoming! We officially got our first small taste of winter as an early winter storm came through and dumped a few inches of snow in the valley, leaving much more up in the mountains. With my time freeing up a bit more, I decided to head out and enjoy the morning and found several bull moose hanging out near the Gros Ventre Campground in Grand Teton National Park. I missed good shots of a couple of them that were hanging out together, but upon waiting a little longer (while under-dressed for the weather), another began making his way over toward the campground entrance.
I wasn’t expecting much from this shot, however in cropping down to a square format, it immediately became one of my favorites for the day. There’s something both intimate and mildly abstract that I love that had all of a sudden jumped out of the photo. Just another little lesson to keep in mind in post-production: if you’re looking at an image that you think could be better, try different cropping aspect ratios. Some images simply weren’t meant to be rectangles.
