The landscape at Trapper Lake was quiet and empty. The nearest camper was 2.5 miles up the trail. The sun was beginning to set and a stillness overtook the lake, producing immaculate reflections. December months generally reinforce the cold that moves in from November, solidifying winter in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Grand Teton National Park, both literally and metaphorically. Many animals are now ending fall migrations, and making last minute preparations for the season.

January was cold. We were in the heart of a historically cold and precipitous winter. The sun by this point had become a legend, forgotten behind the clouds that never seemed to lift from the valley, constantly dropping more and more snow as they had done since late November.
