Sunset Crater National Monument preserves a volcanic landscape, whose primary volcano erupted only 900 years ago. Fantastic hiking trails take visitors through the lava landscape where evidence of the eruption is plain sight. The same road into Sunset Crater will also bring visitors from the tall ponderosa pines to the high desert grasslands where Native American ruins wait at Wupatki National Monument.
