The Santa Rita Mountains and foothills are one of the iconic southern Arizona sky islands. They rise up out of the desert floor thousands of feet to provide its own unique ecosystem surrounding the highest peaks. The Arizona Trail makes fantastic use of its remote beauty and isolation, wandering through beautiful ponderosa pine forests below Mount Wrightson. Stretching from the small town of Patagonia, Arizona to its south, the foothills roll toward the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. Among the foothills is an old mining camp known as Kentucky Camp. Long outdated, the camp utilized clever design for its area, but is now a popular getaway for tourists. The mountains are also home to the "El Jefe," the only known jaguar in the entire United States.
